Deep Roots and Expanded Wings

"There are only two lasting bequests we can give our children... one is roots, the other wings." Steven R. Covey

In a CBS news report by Leslie Stahl a couple of years ago, she reported that scientists have been able to use our DNA to trace genetic roots back hundreds of years. Genealogy has been reported as one of America’s most popular hobbies. Knowing where someone came from is important to many, but more important is the knowledge of where we are going. My mom grew up as an Air Force brat and moved from place to place. Yet, they still considered Florida home since that is where they returned to any time they could. I, on the other hand, lived in the same house from the time I was 10 until I went off to school. My parents are still there. It is home. It is where my roots are. It is where the memories my family has of all of the holidays and Sunday dinners and birthday parties. But roots is not about being planted in a specific location, it is about being planted next to people who know you, love you and share a common bond. It is about knowing who you are as a person and how you relate to those around you. It is having the security of your past to propel you into the future you are creating.
